ABSTRACT

A 18 year young, healthy, immunocompetent girl presented with proptosis of left eye, referred to eye OPD, suspected clinico-radiologically as malignancy. This presentation with suspicion of malignancy resulted into extensive surgical debridement with removal of left eye, which was diagnosed as mucormycosis on histopathological examination. Her eye could have been saved if the mucormycosis was highly suspected initially, because of the good general health and immunocompetency led to misdirected thought.

ABSTRACT

Superficial cutaneous/subcutaneous nodules, caused by a variety of inflammatory, benign and malignant pathology of diverse origin, are tempting lesion for fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Amongst these, adnexal tumor show considerable overlap, both in clinical manifestation as well as in histopathology. Archieval records of clinical findings, FNAC smears and reports pertaining to 5 histologically proved cases of pilomatricoma (PMX) were analyzed. Different cytological findings were graded + to +++. Pre FNAC clinical diagnoses were sebaceous cyst, tuberculous lymphadenopathy, dermatofibroma, reactive lymphadenopathy and lipoma. PMX was diagnosed on FNAC in 3 cases on finding groups of basaloid cells, ghost epithelial cells, pink fibrillary material and calcium deposits. Other cases were diagnosed as epidermal inclusion cyst with the differential diagnosis of well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and skin appendageal tumor of undetermined origin in one case each. In all the cases, FNAC established epithelial nature of the lesion, excluding clinically mimicking inflammatory/neoplastic lesions of other origin. FNAC should be followed by excision biopsy to accurately type the epithelial neoplasm.

ABSTRACT

Pyomyoma (suppurative leiomyoma of the uterus) is a rare condition associated with a high fatality rate. Only surgical intervention is lifesaving. It usually develops in association with either recent pregnancy or in postmenopausal patients who have underlying vascular disease. Since 1945 only 15 cases of pyomyoma have been reported in the literature. We present a rare case of pyomyoma in a 64-year-old woman with a brief review of the literature.

ABSTRACT

Trichoblastoma is a rare benign skin appendage tumour with follicular differentiation. Pigmented variant of trichoblastoma is an extremely uncommon tumour and only three cases have been described in the literature. We report a rare case of pigmented trichoblastoma in a 54-year-old female.

ABSTRACT

Paget's disease of the breast nipple is an eczematous skin change of the nipple-areola complex often associated with an underlying in-situ or invasive carcinoma. The usefulness of cytology in the diagnosis of Paget's disease has been suggested only in few studies despite the fact that it offers definitive advantages over surgical excision biopsy. Easy practicability, quick, cost-effective and non-invasive stands opposite a limited sensitivity as disadvantage. We report a case of Paget's disease of nipple diagnosed by nipple touch smears.

ABSTRACT

Nasal cerebral heterotopia (nasal glioma) are rare congenital benign masses of neurogenic origin with intranasal location, or both. An extranasal case is reported in a 2-year-old-boy without any bony defect or connection with brain. Histology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Two cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), one in a 51-year-old man with accelerated-phase chronic myeloid leukemia and another in a 35-year-old woman with acute myeloblastic leukemia, are reported. Incidental finding of Leishman-Donovan (LD) bodies in patients with leukemia highlights VL as a potent opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed patients.
